Top 10 Warning Signs You Need a New Job

Top 10 Warning Signs You Need a New JobTop 10 Warning Signs You Need a New JobAre you having a tough time at work? Do you simply not want to be there anymora? Are you thinking about quitting your job, but not sure if you should? It might be time to consider whether you need a new job and its time to move on. Sometimes, we wait too long to recognize that a job situation is not a good fit, but waiting can have negative consequences. It can be easier to stay, especially when you get along well with your colleagues but arent thrilled with the job. However, sometimes its a good idea to make the difficult decision that you need a change. Of course, most people cant afford to leave a badeanstalteanstalt job at the drop of a hat, but delaying too long can be detrimental to yourself and to others. Whens the best time to leave, and how do you know when you should make the decision to start a job search? Are You Waiting Too Long to Move On? Staying isnt always the right decision, even when its not easy to leave. Waiting too long to find a new job can cause serious stress, resulting in depression, relationship problems, and residual anger. If you dont appropriately plan your resignation, you may find yourself at your wits end one day and end up quitting on the spot, which will ruin your chances to maintain a positive relationship with your past employer. Or worse, you could end up getting fired because youre not productive. Top 10 Warning Signs You Need a New Job You can prevent these possibilities by recognizing some of the signs that your job is unsustainable before the situation reaches a crisis status. Here are the top 10 signs that you might need a new job. You are already thinking about finding a new job. Barring the occasional, bad-day-induced, I need a new job, now if youve already been mulling over the thought of leaving your job, chances are, that rumination is happening for a good reason. If your dislike for your job, your co-workers, or your boss is con stantly on your mind, you should take that as a sign that its time to start job searching.Your conversations with your family and friends become dominated by complaints and laments about your workday. If every dinner conversation starts and ends with a negative commentary about your day at work, it might be time to find a job that will incite not complaints but instead productive discussion about your professional challenges, lessons learned, and the days highlights. You find yourself frequently dreaming about retirement - even if youre young. Do you spend all day dreaming about retirement, calculating the years, months, and days until the time comes? Dont spend your professional life in countdown mode. Instead, take that feeling and use it as motivation to find a position that is satisfying and emotionally fulfilling.?Your sleep patterns have been disrupted. You have difficulty getting to sleep, or you wake up during the night with worries about your job. Sleep is very important to your health, and job-induced stress can be a cause of poor sleep. Unfortunately, this can exacerbate a difficult situation, making a bad job seem even worse. Being tired all the time can make everything seem like a challenge. You have developed headaches, frequent colds, or other physical symptoms of stress. Your physical health can sometimes be an indicator of your mental health, and if youre feeling generally sick or have a sense of enduring malaise, your job might be to blame. If your job is making you sick, thats a good indicator that its time to look for a new position. You have increased your consumption of alcohol or drugs to escape your problems. While its okay to relax with a glass of wine after work, your day shouldnt be driving you to down a bottle or pour glass after glass of vodka tonic. If you find that your work is causing your copious consumption of alcohol, drugs or cigarettes, you should take some time to reflect on your professional situation. Your appetite is sup pressed, or you are eating more than usual. Some people turn to food in the same way they do to drugs and alcohol, but stress can also cause you to lose your appetite overall. If youre eating or drinking too much because of stress at work, its a sign that this may not be the job for you.You dread Mondays, or you have trouble waking up for work in the morning. Its normal to be tired in the morning, but you shouldnt feel a pit-inducing dread or thought-consuming anxiety when its time to work. You are less productive at work, lack passion, and are bored more often. If youre checking Facebook every ten minutes, playing around with Pinterest, constantly find yourself on YouTube, or are bored with every task, you might need to look for a more mentally stimulating job.You are arguing more often with co-workers or bosses and dont feel you have control over your work. If your dissatisfaction with your job is causing tension in the office or if you have received warnings about your wertmiger zuwachs or behavior, its definitely time to start looking for a new position. Its better to leave a job on good terms so you can keep your past employer as a source for recommendations and as a network connection. Its also important to avoid being fired if you can help it. Of course, these signs can be indicators of other personal, emotional, or physical problems, but if you are stressed about work and experiencing some of these symptoms then you certainly need to reevaluate your employment situation. What to Do Next If youve made the decision to move on, dont just quit your job. In most cases, you can carefully and strategically start looking for a new position before you turn in your resignation. Its easier to get hired when youre working, you dont know how long it will take you to find another job, and you may not be able to collect unemployment benefits if you quit. Rather, take the time to plan your job search. In addition to getting you out of a bad situation, it will giv e you something else to focus on instead of the job youre not happy with.

What happens when a big business tries to take over and rename a neighborhood

What happens when a big business tries to take over and rename a neighborhoodWhat happens when a big business tries to take over and rename a neighborhoodWhat if Google tried to rename your neighborhood? That happened to some Californians in 2017, when Google Maps changed the moniker of three San Francisco neighborhoods Rincon Hill, Folsom, and Transbay to East Cut.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreGiven the extensive reach that Google has in the transmission of geographic data, through Google Maps and its geospatial analysis software Google Earth Engine, the name quickly spread and welches adopted by other businesses, such as Uber. But residents decried the change. Its degrading to the reputation of our area, one told The New York Times.Neighborhood renaming is elendhing new. Name changes occur when historical names no longer fit, during rebranding campaigns and through gentrifi cation such as when Pigtown, Brooklyn welches renamed Wingate. The name Pigtown originally referred to a number of pig farms located in the area. In the 2000s, the area was renamed Wingate by developers to lure in new buyers. There are many reasons why someone might want to change their neighborhoods name, but whats driving current name-changing initiatives carried out by big businesses with little or no personal connection to the places they rename? As a geographer, I see three main driving forces all of which can leave longtime locals feeling upset and left out.Marketing rebrandTake National Landing, Amazons new name for Crystal City, Virginia. The name was decided upon by Amazon, local economics groups and JBG Smith, a real estate company based in Washington, D.C. The name change, revealed in Amazons November announcement on its new headquarters, was meant to unite the neighborhoods in Northern Virginia, Crystal City, Pentagon City, and Potomac Yard areas. However, in a Washington Post article, Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz suggested that the name change would not be adopted by the local government. In most cases, its not individual companies making these changes. In the case of the East Cut label, it turns out that Community Benefit District Board made up of residential, commercial and nonprofit representatives from the area approved the change in 2017, working with Google to come up with the label.Gentrification divisionsGentrification of dilapidated urban neighborhoods is a common driver of renaming.Research in Philadelphia by sociologist Jackelyn Hwang shows that gentrification not only shifts the demographics of a given area, but leads to divergent definitions of neighborhoods.Minority residents were more likely to call a wide area one neighborhood, named South Philly. White residents, by contrast, divided the same area into multiple neighborhoods, such as Graduate Hospital, G-Ho, So-So, South Rittenhouse, South Square and Southwest Center Cit y, splitting up areas by their socioeconomic characteristics and crime levels. In such cases, the use of different neighborhood definitions served to legitimize ones presence in a community. Neighborhoods do this by evoking a sense of place for residents, describing a relationship that the place has with someones biography, imagination and personal experiences. The names create boundaries between those who are perceived to belong to these communities and those who do not.Real estate adsAnother driver of neighborhood label change is the real estate market. The use of catchy names, like SoHo in Manhattan, evokes images about the type of environment you might find there. Create the right vision for a buyer, and the area might seem more appealing to them.In Detroit, Google is also responsible for renaming neighborhoods and even inserting new names, like the Eye. The New York Times has speculated that the real estate market is a likely culprit.Real estate agents use neighborhood names in their marketing campaigns. These new labels can get picked up by companies like Google, legitimizing the changes through the companys wide influences. In the Detroit case, officials created their own neighborhood map of Detroit, correcting errors in the Google Map.In some cases, these types of changes arent welcome by neighborhood residents. For example, in Harlem, the Keller Williams real estate company began marketing the southern region of Harlem as SoHa without the approval of local residents. This change spurred political action. State Senator Brian Benjamin introduced legislation in 2017 banning these types of unsolicited name changes. While these name changes might seem innocuous, official neighborhood names are recognized by the U.S. Geological Survey. Neighborhoods are one example of a type of populated place that does not have official federally recognized names. What happens when these official names do not correspond to the names on the map?Resisting changeNeighborhoods p lay a critical role in creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie among neighbors. They are known by their institutions, crime rates and appearance, as well as the characteristics of their population.Neighborhood names carry strong cultural and socioeconomic expectations. In a 2015 study, people in 12 major U.S. urban areas were shown online ads for used iPhones. They were less likely to respond if the ad mentioned that the seller was a resident of a disadvantaged neighborhood. That suggests that racial and socioeconomic stigmas related to a neighborhood were transferred to their residents.Whether name changes are driven internally by community members or from external pressures from big businesses like Amazon or Google, these changes have impacts on the social and spatial patterns of urban cities. For example, these types of changes can lead to increased property values, pushing out current residents. In Oakland, California, neighborhood name changes have led to soaring rental pri ces, as higher-income residents from San Fransisco infiltrate the market.Ive seen a few successful cases of neighborhoods getting new names usually when the renamers work together with the locals to include their opinions and celebrate their history. For example, Nap Lab, a design collective located in Indianapolis, took on the citys lack of neighborhood names. New names like University Heights, West Indy and Poplar Grove came out of detailed analysis of city records and community documents, as well collaboration with local experts and the internet. Their map, first released in 2008, is mucksmuschenstill sold today. This article has been updated to clarify when Pigtown was renamed and which neighborhoods were renamed East Cut.Raechel A. New Grads 6 Ways to Start Your Career Off Right, According to the Experts

New Grads 6 Ways to Start Your Career Off Right, According to the Experts Welcome to Recruiter QA, where we pose employment-related questions to the experts and share their answers Have a question youd like to ask? Leave it in the comments, and you might just see it in the next installment of Recruiter QA Todays Question We recently shared some advice from recent grads about starting a career after graduation. Today, we decided to get another perspective on the issue by turning to some established experts. What do they think new graduates need to know about starting their first careers?Weve also included some insights from Dr. Mark Goulston, a leading expert on career success. If you want to hear mora from Dr. Goulston, sign up for the upcoming webinar, 5 Ways Youre Getting in Your Own Way at Work (And How to Stop). Register today and youll receive a free download of Dr. Goulstons best-selling boo k, Get Out of Your Own Way at Work Conquer Self-Defeating Behavior at Work. 1. At Work, Your Employer Is Always Your Top PriorityIt seems so simple to those with years of experience or at least it should but everything you do related to work should either increase the revenues generated by your employer, decrease its expenses, or both. Taking a long lunch break is therefore a bad idea. Coming in early is therefore a good idea. Using your critical thinking skills to find a better process is a good idea. Blindly following bureaucratic orders because someone told you to do so is a bad idea. Steven Rothberg, College Recruiter Mark SaysIt is common not to think of the big goals of your company or your boss. You assume that since he or she went to the trouble of hiring you that they are happy to have you around. As long as you do your work, contribute to the bottom line, and dont make waves, youre good. You also tend to believe that working hard gives you extra credit. But working har d is not the same as working smart.2. Temping Is a Great Way to Start Your CareerUnfortunately, I find that lots of new grads are lacking in the kinds of soft skills that are so valuable in an office setting, like conflict resolution, timely communication, and adaptability. Fortunately, grads can learn these skills on the ground and quickly by taking temporary positions. Four-year degree-holders should put the stigma of temporary work out of their minds. Not only does temporary work allow entry-level workers to try on careers they hadnt previously considered, but it also enables them to continue learning and growing something they likely enjoyed during their college years. Plus, it often leads to full-time work. David Dourgarian, TempWorks 3. Its Best to Be on the Cutting-EdgeOrganizations of all sizes and in all industries face challenges as they attempt to process and leverage the unprecedented amount of data that is captured today. For new graduates and job seekers entering the workforce, organizations are looking for individuals who are able to use data to drive, influence, and communicate business outcomes to encourage innovative ideas for growth. New graduates must set themselves apart by being inquisitive and by understanding the business implications of information analysis. Data and analytics are integral in so many industries, whether it is healthcare, retail, or education. Our university has recognized that the workforce must be on the cutting-edge of the skill sets and capacities needed to be professionals in tomorrows economy. Rhonda Capron, University of Phoenix School of Business Mark SaysLearning a new skill is tough, but if you reframe the situation, it can be challenging and exhilarating. The trick is to tap into a memory of a time when you did learn something new. If you can clearly visualize the experience say, learning to ski or to drive, learning to use a computer, learning to read music and recall the memory of conquering the task, th en you may be able to trigger the sense of pleasure that came from the experience. If you dont get ahead of yourself thinking of everything you wont be able to learn, and instead focus on what you have already learned that you thought you couldnt, your fears will dissipate, your mind will unlock, and you will learn new things.4. Bigger Isnt Always Better When It Comes to EmployersIt is tempting to go for big corporations with recognizable brand names, but keep in mind that most of the time, you will be able to take on more responsibility and create real impact with smaller companies. Also, at your first job out of college, you are essentially paid to learn. So take the job that allows you to learn as much as you can. Learn practical skills and industry knowledge that you could not get while in college. Ngan Pham, Rakuna 5. Be ProactiveThe biggest opportunity for new grads is to be proactive. What drives leadership and career growth isnt checking boxes, but ownership of ones project s and responsibilities. To be more proactive, do the following things - Get to know more people in the organization to learn what their job roles entail and how you can help them.- Ask for more opportunities to engage with leadership or projects that need someone to champion or drive progress.- Finish strong. It is not enough to just complete a project. Ask the project owner how you can exceed good or acceptable and really make it great. If new graduates think in a proactive way, they can really drive their careers forward while helping the company find success at the same time. Tom Borgerding, Campus Media Group Mark SaysSo, how do you take a proactive approach to your work? windschatten Ryan, founder and head of the Los Angelesbased executive search firm Ryan Miller Associates, recommends thinking ahead of time about the goals you are aiming for and how best to get there. This means taking a few minutes at the beginning and end of each day to devote yourself to the most important tasks and there should be no more than three each day. Accomplish them, and you will find yourself much more productive.6. Grades and Prestige Wont Get You Far But Skills WillGrades dont matter anymore. Where you went to school wont help you on the job. Once you start work after graduation (no matter what type of work it is), its your ability to demonstrate the more intangible impact skills that matter most to your success. These are things like grit, curiosity, and ownership. There are plenty of ways to hone them if you need to and most of us need to. When you start that first job, figure out who the rock stars are (it wont be hard) and pay attention. Theyll be the ones who work on something until they get it right, no matter how long it takes (grit). They ask good questions and are receptive to feedback (curiosity). They accept responsibility for their successes and failures with no whining (ownership). Research has demonstrated that if you work hard to mimic their specific beh aviors, you can become a rock star, too. Dont wait for someone to tell you exactly what needs to be done there is no zusammenfassung for life just start doing it, and youll be on your way. Anne Hathaways tip for self-care sounds completely absurd but its not

Anne Hathaways tip for self-care sounds completely absurd but its leidAnne Hathaways tip for self-care sounds completely absurd but its notActress/etzu sicheal goddess Anne Hathaway may seem as though she has a perfect life. As an Oscar winner, one of Hollywoods best dressed, and the namesake of William Shakespeares wife, Hathaway seems to reside on an ethereal cloud where merry minstrels sing poetry and everyone wears couture. But Hathaway has had her fair share of hard times, partly because of backlash from audience members who think shes too perfect. Especially after her 2013 Academy Award for Les Misrables, the same passion and determination that drove her wave of success became grounds for deep, petty abhorrence by critics. As she faced constant vilification, there was little Hathaway could do to reroute the narrative.
